Paintings with atmosphere
I paint portraits that are concerned less with description and more with presence ā with mood, light, and the inner life of the sitter.
About
Although trained in traditional atelier methods, my work moves away from formal portraiture and towards something quieter and less fixed.
Iām interested in ambiguity, in what is suggested rather than stated, and in allowing a painting to remain open rather than resolved.
A painting does not need to explain itself to be felt.
Often what matters most is not the accuracy of a feature, but the atmosphere that gathers around it ā the sense that something is being held back, or remembered.
Commissions
I accept a limited number of portrait commissions each year.
The work is developed slowly, with an emphasis on tone, light, and psychological presence rather than finish or display.
I work from my studio in Lewes.
My paintings are held in private collections and have been exhibited in the UK and abroad.
